Airport security scare

Bloemfontein – There was a huge commotion at the Bloemfontein Airport when an object “which looked like a bomb detonator” was found in the luggage of a Chinese businessman from Bloemfontein.

When the Parkway police station’s bomb squad and K9 unit arrived, it was determined that the object was an element possibly of a  heating system.

Captain Chaka Marope, police spokesperson, says the Chinese businessman from Bloemfontein was on his way from the Bloemfontein to the OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg on Friday at about 10:00 when the incident took place.

The security official who searched his luggage became suspicious when he saw what looked like a “bomb mechanism” on his screen. He called the police.

The security official told Volksblad on Sunday that the object was in the businessman’s main luggage, not his hand luggage. Marope says the object, which had red, green and white wiring, was later identified as a heating element, possibly that of a geyser.

Volksblad was unable to get in touch with the man because the police had not taken his details. He was allowed to go once police were convinced the object was harmless.

Johan Scholtz, airport manager, could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

An official who was in charge on Sunday who didn’t want to be identified, told Volksblad that people should rather declare “unusual items” for security reasons.
