The Mangaung municipality is to spend R40 million (£3.8 million) on a new website for the city. So what exactly does a smaller municipality in South Africa get for flashing this ridiculous amount of taxpayers’ cash on a new website?
Surely, they must be planning a website to rival the likes of Facebook and the new Google+ project.
I’m imagining a website that will be all singing, all dancing and will do all good things for us little people. Perhaps the website will be a super-entity, a saviour even, that will fix potholes, build houses in townships and improve service delivery while benefiting the taxpayer… with a huge grin. Everyone’s happy!
The R40 million website will definitely not:
- end up in the pockets of ANC cadres
- waste taxpayers’ money
- be a slap in the face to every citizen of Mangaung / Bloemfontein
- disregard the needs of the very poor who have voted in their thousands for the ANC
- be a laughing stock to all and sundry
No, this new website will come with all the hot air and fanfare that we have come to expect from corrupt officials. Or maybe I am wrong and this planned website still has an ace up its sleeve: It will come with the ANC monopoly-card guarantee that everyone supporting it will get into heaven for free.
– The use and download of information will be optional, of course.
(This blog post is my interpretation of the perceived shambolic practices of the ANC and to highlight the abuse of power. You should interpret it and share it as you please.)
