Freshlyground, Love No Hate

Freshlyground makes soundtracks for a young South African democracy. They are like no other band, yet liked the world over. From an international point of view they are not mainstream, but certainly well known.

With three albums under the belt, they have created songs that get and stay under your skin. Songs that are instant hits with catchy choruses, but also songs that can take some good time to grow on you. Works of art that have to be listened to over and over again to truly appreciate their musical genius.

My favourite album remains the heartfelt ‘Nomvula’ with the tasty title track, catchy ‘Doo Be Doo’ and beautiful ‘I’d like’. However, my all time favourite track must be ‘Ask Me’ from the album ‘Ma ‘Cheri’. The song is totally underestimated and says a lot about the positive attitude of the band. It is full of personal experience and conviction that can be translated to South Africa as a whole.

Listen, this band is good news! They make me buy each album they release. They do this through their rich sounds and lyrics that make me pause, laugh and cry. They make me feel South African.

Catch Freshlyground in Bloemfontein on 18 and 19 November at ABSA Sand du Plessis theatre and the Botshabelo Paradise Hall.
