Full House at Preller Plein took top honours as Best Asian and Sushi restaurant in the 2015 Best of Bloemfontein Readers’ Choice awards. So, I decided to explore their extensive menu.
Full House isn’t just for sushi lovers, they also serve a range of Chinese cuisine like “Golden Delight” stir fried vegetables with your choice of meat prepared with a sticky secret sauce, “Jumping Buddha” a sweet and sour combination that is deep fried, and be prepared – they deep fry some of their desserts too!
I started with a prawn and avocado salad drenched in sushi mayo with just the right combination of crunch provided by lettuce and cucumber shavings. Hubby had miso soup – a traditional Japanese soup consisting of a stock called “dashi” into which softened miso paste is mixed and various seasonal ingredients.
I felt adventurous so didn’t just order the usual sushi suspects of smoked salmon Californian and prawn rainbow rolls. The beancurd roses and strawberry and honey beancurd were both delicious. The beancurd roses was a sushi rice roll wrapped with beancurd with some sushi mayo on top and sprinkled generously with biltong powder and a drizzle of a balsamic like sauce. This might sound like one of Hilda’s combinations, but what a delight. The strawberry and honey beancurd was another delight. The honey highlighted the taste of the fresh strawberries and the avocado gave it that perfect balance. For mains he had Kung Pao chicken, which is a spicy stir-fry dish made with chicken, nuts, vegetables, and chili peppers, a bit too spicy for my liking but he apparently enjoyed it.
Although we didn’t get to have the deep friend pear dessert, we were certainly not disappointed with chocolate black forest pudding stuffed with cherries and the deep friend ice cream.
It is definitely clear why Full House has been winning awards for best sushi in Bloemfontein.
