Oprah Winfrey to visit Bloemfontein

Oprah Winfrey, impressed by the transformation of the University of the Free State, will visit the campus in Bloemfontein on Friday, 24 June 2011.

The vice-chancellor and rector, Prof Jonathan Jansen tweeted: “You heard it here first … On 24 June Oprah Winfrey lands on the campus of the University of the Free State.”

Jansen said: “From what I’ve heard she is so impressed with transformation at the university that she wanted to come see it for herself.”

According to Die Burger, the former talk show host will be presented with an honorary doctorate in education from the university.

Oprah Winfrey has visited South Africa several times. She has her own school, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, in Henley-on-Klip, south of Johannesburg.

I cannot wait to read about Oprah’s experience in Bloemfontein or indeed her comments on events at the UFS over the past few years. Even more interesting, though, would be to see the reaction from Bloemfonteiners to her visit.

Transformation? What transformation are you talking about? How can you visit the oppressor’s headquarters and expect to see transformation? It’s a little like dining with the Nazi’s who’ll tell you that concentration camps like Auschwitz didn’t exist.

Talk to the people on the other campuses first. Then talk about transformation
