Soccer City no more

Bloemfontein, 1 December 2010 – The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein ruled that First National Bank has the only right to name Soccer City – sorry – the FNB Stadium in Soweto.

FNB Stadium is the only name that can show on signs around the stadium, the court has ordered.

The appeal was launched by FNB Stadium management after the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg ruled that the stadium would revert back to its old name, Soccer City, in August 2010.

According to the bank, they only agreed to the name and logo of the stadium to change during the period of the World Cup because of FIFA requirements. However, the agreement with FIFA came to an end a week after the tournament has ended.
